Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan boosted Pakistan’s run-chase charge against New Zealand with a barrage of powerplay boundaries in the second T20I of their five-match series.

Turning up for their country at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, the two senior Pakistani cricketers took a special liking to 26-year-old Ben Sears, flogging the young New Zealand seamer with a 16-run opening over.

Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan ended up sharing a match-defining 37-run partnership for the second wicket, before the former was dismissed by his New Zealand counterpart Michael Bracewell.

Chasing a mere 91 for a win in the second T20I of the series against New Zealand, Pakistan opener Babar Azam and number three Mohammad Rizwan launched a carefree assault on the visitors following the early dismissal of Saim Ayub.

While Rizwan initiated Pakistan’s scintillating response off young New Zealand fast bowler Ben Sears in the fourth over of the innings with a six and a four, captain Babar Azam also followed suite with a sizzling boundary through the vacant midwicket region.

Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan tonked a few more runs in the innings before the former was out stumped by Michael Bracewell. Rizwan, on the other hand, listed an unbeaten 45 from just 34 balls to guide Pakistan past the finishing line with nearly eight overs intact in the game.

Earlier in the match, Pakistan bowlers restricted New Zealand to just 90 upfront off the back of Shaheen Shah Afridi’s three-fer and timely breakthroughs from Mohammad Amir, Abrar Ahmed and Shadab Khan.

With Pakistan taking a 1-0 lead in the five-match series, the two teams will now collide in match number three at the same Rawalpindi venue on April 21.
