Faf du Plessis, Sam Curran Slapped With Heavy Fine By BCCI; Here's The Reason

Royal Challengers Bengaluru and stand-in captain Sam Curran of Punjab Kings have been fined due to breaches of the Indian Premier League Code of Conduct on Sunday, April 21, 2024. 

In match No.36 of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) defeated Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) by a mere margin of 1 run. 

Following the excruciating loss, RCB received another bad news, the IPL organisers fined captain Faf du Plessis Rs 12 lakh for maintaining a slow over rate during their match against KKR. This was the first over-rate offence of the season for the franchise. 

It was a double-header Sunday, the evening match between Punjab Kings and Gujarat Titans was won by Shubhman Gill GT won the match by 3 wickets. 

Facing the loss, the stand-in skipper of Punjab Sam Curran was fined 50% of his match fee under Article 2.8 of the IPL's code of conduct that refers to " showing disagreement at an umpire's decision". 

RCB captain Faf du Plessis Fined For Maintaining Slow Over Rate 

In a release shared by the IPL, Caption of RCB was fined Rs 12 lakh for maintaining a slow over-rate against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens. 

Unlike the previous matches in the ongoing cash-rich league, RCB showcased a better performance and temperament as a team but fell short of a victory by just 1 run. 

“Faf du Plessis, Captain, Royal Challengers Bengaluru has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate during Match 36 of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata on April 21, 2024,” stated an IPL release.

Earlier in the ongoing IPL, Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya, KKR captain Shreyas Iyer, newly appointed captain of Gujarat Titans Shubman Gill, along with Rishabh Pant (was fined in two consecutive matches) for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct and were penalised for maintaining a slow over rate.

Sam Curran Breaches Article 2.8 of the IPL's Code of Conduct

The stand-in captain for Punjab Kings was penalised and found guilty of breaching the IPL Code of Conduct under the level 1 offence of Article 2.8. The home captain accepted the Match referee's sanction and was fined 50% of his match fee. 

“Sam Curran, the Punjab Kings captain, has been fined 50 percent of his match fees for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during his team’s Tata Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 match against the Gujarat Titans at the PCA New International Cricket Stadium, Mullanpur on April 21,” the IPL release. 

Royal Challengers Bengaluru have had a miserable start to the ongoing IPL as the franchise has managed to register just one win and are placed 10th in the points table. On the other hand, PBKS have struggled as well and have registered just two wins in eight matches they have played.
