April 2nd 2024 marks the 13th anniversary of India's historic triumph in the 2011 ODI World Cup final, a momentous occasion that ended a 28-year wait for the title. Led by MS Dhoni, the Indian team etched their names in cricketing history.

While the heroic efforts of Gambhir and Dhoni are often highlighted in the final, it's essential not to overlook the significant contribution made by a then 22-year-old Virat Kohli

His innings played a pivotal role in steadying India's innings after a great spell from Lasith Malinga, ultimately paving the way for India's victory. Harbhajan Singh, a member of that memorable team, fondly remembers Kohli's importance in the final.

"Harbhajan Singh said "Virat Kohli's innings in 2011 World Cup Final was very crucial, when we lost two quick wickets & he played an important innings and made brilliant partnership, no one talked about that innings more but that was very crucial" - Harbhajan spoke to star sports.

After Lasith Malinga dismissed Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag, Virat Kohli stepped in to bat at number 4 alongside Gautam Gambhir, with the score at 31-2.

Kohli and Gambhir then forged a crucial 83-run partnership, laying a solid foundation for MS Dhoni to steer India towards victory, in tandem with Gambhir. Kohli's contribution of 35 runs from 49 balls, comprising 4 boundaries, proved instrumental in India's success.

Despite participating in three more World Cups and even captaining in one, the 2011 World Cup remains the only one Virat Kohli has won in his career so far. This victory marked a significant transition for Kohli, as he took over the mantle from Sachin Tendulkar and became India's primary batter.

Undoubtedly, the 2011 World Cup played a monumental role in shaping Kohli's career trajectory. As for the future, only time will tell if Kohli can add another World Cup win to his fantastic career.
