‘Just One Of Those Games…’ Shreyas Iyer After KKR’s Shocking Defeat To Punjab Kings

The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) lost out their six-hitting brawl against Punjab Kings in match number 42 of the IPL 2024 season at the Eden Gardens. Despite posing a staggering 261 upfront off the back of openers Sunil Narine and Phil Salt, KKR bowlers failed to contain a rampaging Punjab Kings unit in a clinical run-chase.

After the match, KKR skipper Shreyas Iyer reflected his team’s shortcomings in the high-scoring thriller, and also praised his opening duo for providing blitzkriegs starts at the top of the order.

Shreyas Iyer hails opening duo after defeat

A dejected Shreyas Iyer caught up with IPL 2024 commentators to express his views after KKR’s huge defeat to Punjab Kings. Despite the outcome, the 29-year-old hailed his opening duo of Phil Salt and Sunil Narine for their 138-run stand at the top of the order.

Shreyas praised the consistency of his openers, and singled out Narine for his effortless ball-striking. He said:

“The way the batters batted was tremendous to see Sunny and Phil Salt coming in. They have been phenomenal throughout the season. The end of the day they delivered so it’s just treat to the eyes the way they bat. Sunil Narine hits the ball with so ease. It’s just a treat to the eyes even in the nets. Lot to learn from him. Hopefully he is continuing with the same performance.”

Shreyas Iyer also reflected his mindset after the demoralizing defeat, and expressed his grief of not being able to defend 261 runs. The cricketer further claimed that his KKR troops will be aiming to assess the conditions at Eden Gardens, considering they still have one more game lined up at the venue this IPL 2024 season. He added:

“Both the teams played tremendously. It’s just one of those games where you go back and mull over what went wrong. Not able to defend 260 hurts. We have 1 more game here. It’s important we assess the conditions and come up with greater ideas.”

Shreyas Iyer will now lead the KKR franchise against Delhi Capitals in match number 47 of the IPL 2024 season. The much-awaited contest, set to be staged in Kolkata, will be played on April 29.
