IPL 2023 | "We have seen that with Prithvi Shaw": Sunil Gavaskar on Ambati Rayudu and Impact Rule

One of the mainstays of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) batting Ambati Rayudu is not having the best of times in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023. The former Indian batter has managed just 83 runs this season, mostly coming in as an 'Impact Player'. Against the Rajasthan Royals (RR) last evening, Rayudu managed a two-ball duck in CSK's 32-run loss in pursuit of 203, which invited criticism from all corners.

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar slammed Rayudu for his shot selection, mainly when the batter tried a slog sweep against Ravichandran Ashwin. The 73-year-partially blamed the 'Impact Rule' for Rayudu's decision.

Speaking to Star Sports, Gavaskar gave the example of Delhi Capitals' Prithvi Shaw, while explaining his point about the new rule.

Here's what Gavaskar said

"You got to field. You can't just come out to bat and start hitting the ball. You can't do that. We have seen that with Prithvi Shaw. He has just been coming out to bat without success. No fielding, no scoring. Rayudu is out for a second-ball duck,"

Shaw, who has been used as an 'Impact Player' by DC, has managed just 47 runs in the IPL 2023 so far.

CSK will hope that Rayudu regains his form soon, as the tournament moves into the second half. Overall, in 196 IPL matches, Rayudu has amassed 4,273 runs with one hundred and 22 half-centuries.

MS Dhoni-led side takes on Punjab Kings on Sunday in Chennai.
