Punjab Kings outmuscled Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in a high-scoring thriller at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens on April 26.

After conceding 261 runs upfront to the hosts, Punjab Kings opener Jonny Bairstow whacked an imperial match-winning century and shared blistering stands with half-centurions Prabhsimran Singh and Shashank Singh.

Here’s the timeline of how KKR vs PBKS panned out in Kolkata-

KKR vs PBKS Highlights: Sunil Narine, Phil Salt Pummel PBKS At The Top

KKR openers Sunil Narine and Phil Salt leathered Punjab Kings’ new-ball attack at the top to race to a 76-run powerplay stand. The two blistering batters even consigned visiting paceman Kagiso Rabada for 43 runs off his first two overs, and ended up forming 137 unbeaten runs at the halfway stage of the innings.

Narine eventually became KKR’s first casualty of the evening after bashing 71 off 32 balls, considering he mistimed one off Rahul Chahar at 138-1.

Salt also followed suite a couple of overs later as he was cleaned up by Punjab Kings skipper Sam Curran at 37-ball 75. Twin strikes from Chahar and Curran halted KKR’s run-scoring charge, at least for a while, as the hosts slipped to 163-2 after their 138-run opening stand from 10 overs.

KKR vs PBKS Highlights: Shreyas Iyer Carries Momentum, Takes KKR To 261

Following the dismissal of Andre Russell (24 off 12 balls) at 203-3 through Arshdeep Singh, KKR skipper Shreyas Iyer piled on the opening momentum by pumping out 28 unbeaten runs off his own from just 10 deliveries. The cricketer clattered his opposite number Sam Curran for a huge 24-run over towards the end to blaze KKR to a monumental 261-run total upfront.

Venkatesh Iyer also slapped 39 runs from 23 balls while Ramandeep Singh pounded a huge six off Harshal Patel in the final over of the KKR innings.

KKR vs PBKS Highlights: Prabhsimran Singh Unleashes Powerplay Fury

Punjab Kings’ struggling opener Prabhsimran Singh attained some form by notching up his first half-century of the IPL 2024 season. The 23-year-old initiated his team’s aggressive intent at the top, belting Harshit Rana and Dushmantha Chameera with huge overs to race to an 18-ball half-century inside the first five overs of the innings.

Emboldened by Prabhsimran’s ball-striking, Jonny Bairstow launched his own onslaught on Anukul Roy in the final over of the powerplay before an unfortunate runout briefly halted Punjab Kings’ rampage at 93-1 from six overs.

KKR vs PBKS Highlights: Bairstow Ton, Shashank’s Brilliance Seals Record Chase For PBKS

After playing second fiddle to half-centurion Prabhsimran Singh, Englishman Jonny Bairstow became the aggressor of a fresh 85-run second-wicket partnership with Rilee Rossouw (16-ball 26). Despite Rossouw’s dismissal at the hands of Sunil Narine at 178-2, Bairstow ensured Punjab Kings kept afloat with the asking rate and formed a formidable stand with IPL 2024 cult hero Shashank Singh.

While the dashing English opener completed a 45-ball century at the end of the 16th over, Shashank (68* off 28) drilled a sequence of eight towering sixes to help his side pull off T20 cricket’s all-time record chase.

Their collective diligence helped Punjab Kings mow down KKR’s 261 with eight wickets and eight balls to spare.
