Pakistan’s returning captain Babar Azam is now the record holder for most fours in the T20I format after he slammed a 35-ball 50 against New Zealand in the series-deciding fifth T20 game.

Babar Azam, highly rated Pakistani batter, reclaimed white-ball captaincy from Shaheen Afridi last month following a change in PCB leadership.

With the T20 World Cup being a priority, Babar’s first assignment post-leadership reinstatement was against a half-strength New Zealand side. However, surprisingly, Pakistan bottled two games on the trot, thus putting the five-game series in danger.

That being said, the fifth and final T20I was held earlier today in Lahore, and New Zealand invited Pakistan to bat first. Babar Azam opened with Saim Ayub, who departed in the second over of the powerplay.

Regardless, Babar seemed headstrong from one end and played his strokes with positive intent. He raced to his half-century in just 35 balls and set an all-time high format record on the way.

Babar Azam hit 6 fours in his 69 runs innings and became the batter with most fours in T20I history. Ireland’s Paul Stirling previously held the record with 407 fours in 136 innings.

However, Babar Azam, who played his 107th inning earlier today, surpassed the figure to dethrone Stirling and claim the top spot on the list.

That being said, Babar is also the only player with less than 100 sixes among those who have hit 300 and more fours in the shorter format.

Nevertheless, Azam’s return to form is essential for Pakistan as they look forward to putting up a competitive show in the impending T20 World Cup.
