In an unfortunate turn of events, explosive keeper-batter Azam Khan will likely miss Pakistan's first T20I match against New Zealand due to injury. Notably, Azam has sustained a right knee injury, which might keep him out of the high-octane clash between the two competitive outfits.

As 'The Nation' reported, Azam Khan felt discomfort in his right knee and right calf muscle while batting during the net session on Wednesday.

The PCB's medical team is closely monitoring Azam Khan's condition, and his potential participation in the series opener is hanging in the balance, pending the results of the radiology reports.

Renowned for his scintillating stroke play, Azam Khan was deeply committed to his fitness, as evidenced by his active participation in the rigorous workout exercises during the 11-day fitness camp organised by the Pakistan Army in Kakul.

However, despite being given regular opportunities, the cricketer is yet to prove his mettle with the bat on the biggest stage. In seven T20I innings, Azam has scored only 29 runs at a horrendous average of 4.83.

Meanwhile, considering Pakistan have included Shadab Khan and Imad Wasim in their squad, Azam was anyhow unlikely to start in the playing XI. In his absence, Mohammad Rizwan will keep wickets for Pakistan.

The first T20I between Pakistan and New Zealand is scheduled at the Rawalpindi Stadium this evening at 8.00 PM IST.
