How Can Struggling RCB Still Qualify For IPL 2024 Playoffs? Here's The Explanation

At the midway point of this year's IPL season, the gap in quality between the top four teams and the rest is evident. Among the heavyweights, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) are almost out of contention for the next round. With just one victory in eight matches, they currently occupy the bottom position in the points table.

Their recent defeat to the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), where they narrowly lost by 1 run, was particularly devastating. While there remains a slight glimmer of hope for RCB to qualify, it would require everything to align perfectly in their favour.

The Bengaluru-based franchise are facing challenges, having won only once in eight games. Their bowling attack looks clueless, and their batting has failed to seal victories on several occasions. A combination of factors has diminished RCB’s chances of qualifying.

How Can RCB still qualify for playoffs?

Realistically, RCB’s hopes of winning the IPL trophy in 2024 seem bleak. However, theoretically and mathematically, RCB still has a chance to make it to the playoffs.

If RCB wins all six of their remaining games, including the upcoming match against the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Hyderabad, they will accumulate 14 points. Then, the scenario involves mathematical calculations regarding other teams.

RCB will need to hope that no more than three other teams accumulate more than 14 points in total. If only three teams reach 14 points and RCB wins all their upcoming games, there is a possibility that RCB might qualify for the playoffs.

However, SRH, KKR, and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) have each won 5 games, while Rajasthan Royals (RR) have already won 7.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Delhi Capitals (DC) and Gujarat Titans have won 4 each. The competition for the title among these teams is intense. The possible resurgence of RCB alongside the unexpected decline of other teams is almost absurd.

Currently, one team that seems almost certain to advance to the playoffs is RR, as they lead the points table with 14 points in eight games.

In the 16 IPL seasons so far, RCB have reached the playoffs 8 times, but they might miss out this time.
