Punjab Kings (PBKS) fell 21 runs short of their target against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) to register their second successive defeat in the Indian Premier League (IPL 2024) season.

Chasing a monumental 200-run target at Lucknow, Punjab's captain Shikhar Dhawan top-scored in the innings with a splendid 70 and shared a 102-run opening stand with Jonny Bairstow.

However, Bairstow’s dismissal led to a colossal top-order collapse as Punjab Kings fell from 102-0 to 141-5 in the space of just five overs.

LSG debutant Mayank Yadav led his team’s fightback against Punjab Kings by picking up three key wickets, including that of Bairstow and Jitesh Sharma. After the match, losing skipper Dhawan praised LSG’s young speed gun and also lamented the unfortunate injury of Liam Livingstone in the game.

Punjab Kings skipper Shikhar Dhawan lamented the untimely injury of Liam Livingstone in the game, one which prevented the Englishman to bat at the top during their high-intensity run-chase against LSG.

While speaking during the post-match presentation ceremony, Dhawan said:“They played well of course. I felt Livi (Liam Livingstone)'s injury didn't help us. He could have come in to bat at four.”

Shikhar Dhawan was also in awe of LSG debutant Mayank Yadav, considering the young speedster recorded the fastest delivery of the IPL 2024 season with a 155kph peach to the Punjab Kings captain

“Mayank bowled well and his pace outsmarted us. It was nice facing him. He surprised me because he was bowling fast. But I had to use my experience. I thought he would bowl bouncers but he bowled a yorker and I got a leg bye," the PBKS stated.

Shikhar Dhawan further rued team’s recent fielding lapses, citing the example of dropping Virat Kohli in the previous game and LSG stalwart KL Rahul in their huge defeat at Lucknow.

“We have got to analyze. We have to take catches. In the last game, we dropped Virat and today, we dropped KL. We have to plan better. Talking is one thing and implementing is another.”

Battered and bruised at Lucknow, Shikhar Dhawan will now lead his Punjab Kings troops for their subsequent IPL 2024 challenge against Gujarat Titans.

The much-awaited contest will be staged at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on April 4.
