Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has selected India and Australia as the top contenders for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024, which is scheduled to be held in the USA and West Indies from June 1. 

Notably, he omitted defending champions England, runners-up Pakistan, and hosts West Indies from his list of favourites.

Despite the tournament being few weeks away, excitement is already building. The event will feature a total of 55 matches across nine cities, including three in the USA and six in the Caribbean. This marks the first time that the US has been entrusted with hosting such a prestigious tournament.

"India and Australia are the two best teams of the tournament. I'm sure they will perform exceptionally well in the USA and the West Indies," Sourav Ganguly told reporters.

The first T20 World Cup took place in 2007, with India emerging as the champions. However, since then, they haven't claimed another title. 

The Rohit Sharma-led Indian team features stars like Suryakumar Yadav, Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah and Kuldeep Yadav, the Indian team possesses a formidable lineup and could prove to be a tough opponent in the tournament. 

Australia, the winners of the 2021 edition, are considered the second favourites. After securing victories in the World Test Championship and the ODI World Cup in 2023, the Mitchell Marsh-led team will look to make history by becoming the first team to simultaneously hold all three ICC trophies.

Team India is placed with co-hosts USA, arch-rivals Pakistan, Ireland, and Canada in Group A. Meanwhile, Australia finds themselves in Group B alongside defending champions England, Namibia, Scotland, and Oman.
