Indian Test specialist Cheteshwar Pujara has set his sights firmly on reclaiming his place in Team India following his omission from the squad against West Indies. Notably, Pujara was dropped mainly due to a subdued showing in the World Test Championship 2023 final against Australia. However, his recent exploits in county cricket suggest he's in prime form.

Cheteshwar Pujara optimistic about comeback to the Indian team

Representing Sussex in the ongoing One-Day Cup, Pujara has made waves by scoring two centuries: a brilliant unbeaten 106 against Northamptonshire followed by 117* against Somerset.

These performances resulted in an aggregate of 304 runs in just four outings, making him one of Sussex's leading run-scorers. His stellar form was further underscored by a stellar 133 for West Zone in Duleep Trophy 2023.

Speaking on Sussex's YouTube channel, Pujara stated that his focus is on scoring runs and staying in the moment. He is hopeful and aims to regain his place in India's team through strong performances in first-class matches.

“I always try and control the things which I can and it’s always about getting as many runs as possible in whatever games I play. I am still in the scheme of things (for India), so I hope that the moment I start scoring runs in first-class games, I’ll be back into the team, but I’ll just try and be in the present, try and take one game at a time,” said Pujara.

The veteran batter reckoned that with no Tests for a few months, he's concentrating on upcoming games and the Championships matches in September. He also said that the subsequent Test series in South Africa in December is on his radar, but he's taking it one step at a time.

"The next Test series is in South Africa in December so there is a long way to go, but I’ll try and focus on the next few games and then try and move into the Championships because we have a few important Championships games coming up in September. We have a chance to qualify and that’s the prime focus for us,” concluded the Indian stalwart.
