'He’s Getting A Scan…,' Pat Cummins Provides Major Injury Update on Travis Head

Australia's skipper, Pat Cummins, shared an update on Travis Head's recovery from a hand injury that has sidelined him during the initial phase of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023 in India.

Head was a part of Australia's 15-man World Cup squad, but he did not travel with the rest of the team to India, as he has been recuperating from a hand injury sustained during an ODI series against South Africa in September.

In a press conference held prior to the crucial match against South Africa in Lucknow, Pat Cummins revealed that Travis Head is scheduled to undergo scans on Thursday to assess the extent of his recovery. After consulting with a surgeon based on the scan results, a decision will be made regarding his availability for the tournament.

"Yeah, no update. I think it's tomorrow he's getting a scan and seeing the surgeon to get an update. So hopefully next couple of days,"  Pat Cummins said while addressing the press conference ahead of Australia's next game against South Africa in Lucknow on October 12.

The decision to include Head in the World Cup squad was made thoughtfully. Ashton Agar, a left-arm spinner initially part of the 15-man squad, had to be dropped due to an ongoing calf injury that failed to heal in time.

This vacancy paved the way for Head's inclusion, despite his injury. The chief Australian selector George Bailey deemed Head's role too vital to Australia's title aspirations to omit him.

Head sustained a hand fracture before Australia's arrival in India when he faced a quick short delivery from Gerald Coetzee at SuperSport Park during an ODI against South Africa last month. While the severity of the injury initially cast doubt on his participation in the early stages of the World Cup, Head was named in Australia's final squad for the ongoing tournament.

Although Travis Head has been absent, Australia remains a strong and well-rounded team. Mitchell Marsh has been opening the innings alongside David Warner in Head's place.

With depth in their batting lineup, it will be interesting to see who will ultimately secure a spot in the lineup, especially if Head regains fitness and becomes available for selection.
