Indian captain Rohit Sharma added another chapter to his ODI World Cup journey, setting new records as he smashed a scintillating century against Afghanistan during the 2023 World Cup match in Delhi on October 11.

In pursuit of 273 runs, Rohit's explosive innings led to a century off just 63 balls, breaking Kapil Dev's record for the fastest century by an Indian in World Cup history. His remarkable 131 off 84 balls secured India's second consecutive win.

With his seventh World Cup century, Rohit surpassed Sachin Tendulkar's record of six ODI World Cup centuries. He also equaled the record for the fastest batsman to reach 1000 runs in ODI World Cup history. Rohit's performance was truly special, breaking numerous records and thrilling cricket enthusiasts worldwide with his batting mastery.

It was an extraordinary night for the Hitman as he shattered numerous records and delighted fans worldwide with a spectacular batting display.

Reflecting on Rohit's journey, VVS Laxman, the National Cricket Academy (NCA) chief and former India international, commended him for his resilience. Laxman highlighted that despite being dropped from the 2011 World Cup squad, Rohit bounced back and now holds the record for the most ODI World Cup centuries.

"From this in 2011, to becoming the highest ever century maker in World Cup history, scoring 7 hundred in just 2 World Cups plus 2 matches, just proves again that “Never ever give up” and that Champions find a way to live their dream,"  VVS Laxman wrote on his X handle.

Rohit eyes World Cup glory

Laxman's post included an old tweet from Rohit expressing his disappointment after not being selected for the 2011 World Cup. Rohit's journey from that moment has been remarkable, and he has participated in every World Cup India has played in since.

Twelve years ago, who could have predicted that the same man left out of the 2011 World Cup squad would eventually lead the Men in Blue in a World Cup on home soil?

Rohit has consistently expressed his dream of winning the ODI World Cup, and in the 2023 World Cup, he has a significant opportunity to achieve that dream and make history.
