Sri Lankan captain and all-round legend Chamari Athapaththu found no buyers at the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024 auction earlier this month to become one of the biggest player snubs from the bidding event. Remarkably, the cricketer went unsold despite bagging the ‘Player of the Tournament’ award in Australia’s WBBL 2023 just a week prior to the auction.

Former Sri Lankan men’s all-rounder Russell Arnold, Indian women’s legend Anjum Chopra and former England captain Charlotte Edwards were among the leading cricketing personalities to express their surprise over Athapaththu’s treatment.

Seemingly dejected by the snub, the Sri Lankan legend herself has now expressed her first reactions by sharing a cryptic story on her Instagram account.

Chamari Athapaththu shares cryptic reaction

A couple of days after the WPL 2024 auction, Sri Lankan women’s captain Chamari Athapaththu took to her Instagram account and shared a cryptic story about going unsold at the bidding event. Sharing a picture of herself alongside a caption, she wrote:

“Actions and Numbers speak louder than words.”

Chamari Athapaththu recently bludgeoned 552 runs for Sydney Thunder at the 2023 WBBL season in Australia. The cricketer scored her runs from 14 innings and maintained a heathy average of over 42. The 33-year-old also silently harvested nine wickets through her right-arm off-breaks at an average of 27.22.

Athapaththu, a veteran of over 120 T20Is and nearly 100 ODI matches, has already featured in India-based Women’s T20 Challenge for the Supernovas. The cricketer is also a prominent face among some of the leading franchise-based leagues in the world, having turned up for Perth Scorchers, Melbourne Renegades and Sydney Thunder in WBBL and for Guyana Amazon Warriors in CPL.
