IPL 2023 | LSG vs PBKS: Talking Points and Who Said What?

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) rose back to form after shambolic defeat and recorded 257/5 in the first innings to become only the second team in the Indian Premier League (IPL) to cross the 250-run mark.

Defending a mammoth total against Punjab Kings (PBKS), LSG were never troubled and eventually restricted their opposition to 201/10.

Let's highlight the talking points of the match:

LSG register second-highest IPL total

Lucknow Super Giants batting line-up totalled 257 runs which is the second-highest in the league's history. Royal Challengers Bangalore's 263 retained top spot.

The likes of Kyle Mayers (54), Ayush Badoni (43), Marcus Stoinis (72) and Nicholas Pooran (45) went berserk as Lucknow reigned supreme throughout the first half of the fixture.

LSG get the batting order right

Barring the call to send Badoni at number three which in hindsight can be termed as a game-changer, although debatable, the Super Giants nailed their batting order today.

Stoinis and Pooran had enough deliveries left to make greater impacts as their respective knocks helped LSG thrive.

Taide's maiden IPL fifty

Though Punjab did not have many positives to take away, they surely would be pleased with Atharva Taide, who hammered his maiden IPL fifty.

While the Kings found run-scoring tough in the initial overs and also lost two early wickets, Taide seemed to be batting on a different strip and ended up scoring a 36-ball 66.

Livingstone's demotion

It might have not mattered much but Liam Livingstone was demoted from his usual position in a run-chase of 258 runs. Let that sink in!

Punjab promoted Sikandar Raza to number four and he scored 36 runs off 22 balls.

LSG use nine bowlers

Lucknow's depth can be known from the fact that after tonking 257 runs, they tried as many as nine bowlers in the second innings.

Only KL Rahul, Pooran and Mayers did not bowl for LSG today.

Who said what?

Shikhar Dhawan (Punjab Kings Captain)

"Yep absolutely we gave away too many runs and yeah we paid the price for it. I guess we were off-colour with the ball. We were short of a spinner tonight I guess as we went with an extra fast bowler. We tried for something and it didn't come good. It is a very good learning curve. There is no particular reason for holding back Shahrukh Khan. We had Livi (Livingstone) and Sam Curran in the middle and I was okay with it. Sometimes the impact players work sometimes don't. It's parts and parcels of the game."

KL Rahul (Lucknow Super Giants Captain)

"Something we have done right, I don't want to put a finger on it. We would have chased as well this game but happy that we could get the win. Every game from now on in the second half becomes really important. The last game was a downer and did hurt a lot of us as a team but we got 3 or 4 days break after that which was good. The think tank does most of the thinking and I spend a little bit of time understanding what they're thinking and if that's exactly what I want as a captain and if it suits us we go with it."

Marcus Stoinis (Player of the Match)

"It was nice. We were joking about the difference here and the one at home. We were just trying to build a partnership. Ayush got off to a flier as well hitting some nice shots. He is a very talented player so we just tried to keep building and that was our only focus. I enjoy the responsibility of batting a bit lower and saving the game home as well so part of my career has been batting in every position. Bowl first over, bowl last over try to mix and match. I am happy to do whatever the team needs."
