Australia Women secured a handy lead against hosts India courtesy of their courageous second-innings fightback on Day 3 of their one-off Test match at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium.

The day commenced with Team India resuming at 376-7, with overnight batters Deepti Sharma and Pooja Vastrakar still occupying the crease. Australian fast bowler Annabel Sutherland picked up two of the final three wickets on offer, while new-ball pacer Kim Garth curtailed Deepti's threatening knock at 78 to shoot out the Indian line-up for 406 in 126.3 overs.

Tahlia McGrath leads Australian fightback

Up against a 187-run first-innings deficit, Australian openers Beth Mooney and Phoebe Litchfield shared 49 runs together before the former's casual approach found her short of Richa Ghosh's vigilant throw from silly point.

Ellyse Perry at number three pounded 45 runs from her end and formed a counterattacking 84-run partnership with half-centurion Tahlia McGrath for the third wicket. McGrath herself pumped out 73 runs to top-score in the day, defying the likes of India's in-form spinners Sneh Rana and Deepti Sharma in the process.

The star all-rounder ensured Australia wiped out their deficit by the day's final session before she was castled by India's unlikely spin hero Harmanpreet Kaur for 73 runs.

Kaur also removed her opposite number, Alyssa Healy, a while later to worsen Australian troubles at 221-5. All-rounders Annabel Sutherland (12*) and Ashleigh Gardner (7*) eventually survived the remaining overs of the day to extend the Australian lead to 46 runs. The two cricketers will resume the visitors' second innings at 233-5 on Day 4.
