It's not every day that a single moment takes away all the spotlight in a cricket match but Manchester Originals captain, Sophie Ecclestone's spectacular catch in The Hundred 2023 on Sunday at Headingley did just that.

Ecclestone's breathtaking catch stole spotlight in The Hundred 2023

The ace spinner displayed her fielding brilliance as she took an incredible reflex catch to dismiss Northern Superchargers' in-form batter, Phoebe Litchfield.

It all happened on the 66th delivery of the Superchargers' innings. The flighted delivery, bowled by Ecclestone tempted Litchfield into attempting a powerful drive over the bowler's head. However, the ball, having missed the bat's core, skimmed low and fast.

Notably, the ball was struck fiercely, and it was travelling but Ecclestone with her impeccable reflexes managed to turn with the ball's momentum, sealing the catch with both hands and leaving spectators and teammates alike in disbelief. Her spectacular catch not only ended Litchfield’s promising innings but also marked a moment of sheer brilliance on the field.

While the day eventually belonged to the Superchargers, courtesy of Litchfield's earlier efforts and Alice Davidson Richards's pivotal bowling spell, Ecclestone's catch was the only silver lining for the Originals.

Hollie Armitage’s women posted 133/5 in their 100 balls. Litchfield top-scored with 39 off 20 balls. In response, the Originals managed just 108/7 in 80 balls, as they fell short by five runs in what was a rain-curtailed game.

The Superchargers, riding on their success, have firmly established themselves in the second position of The Hundred Points table with eight points to their name, while the Originals, despite their captain's unforgettable moment, are in fifth place with four points.
