Sri Lankan cricketer Sachithra Senanayake has been imposed with a ban on overseas travel by a local court. The 38-year-old lanky off-spinner was accused of fixing several matches of the 2020 Lanka Premier League (LPL).

Senanayake has not played a single competitive match since October last year, when he turned up for Sri Lanka Navy Sports Club in the 2022 Major League Tournament.

Senanayake in legal turmoil with travel ban

Sachithra Senanayake has been accused of trying to fix LPL 2020 matches, and also for enticing two other players to fix games over the telephone.

Quite recently, the Colombo Chief Magistrate's Court ordered the Controller General of Immigration and Emigration to impose a three-month overseas travel ban on the cricketer. The order itself was obtained by the Attorney General’s Department.

A Special Investigation Unit of the Sri Lankan Sports Ministry has also advised the department to level criminal charges against Senanayake.

The Colombo-born cricketer played a Test, 49 ODIs and 24 T20I matches for Sri Lanka between the years 2012 and 2016. Through his right-arm offbreaks, he claimed 78 wickets across formats, and was one of the key figures of Sri Lanka’s triumphant run at the 2014 T20 World Cup in Bangladesh.

Senanayake also played several matches for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the 2013 and 2014 editions of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Moreover, he was a part of the squad that lifted the title in the latter of the two seasons.
