The debut of Hardik Pandya as the captain of Mumbai Indians was a forgettable one, as the team suffered a narrow six-run defeat against his former team, Gujarat Titans, now led by Shubman Gill, on Sunday, March 24, at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

The atmosphere at the Ahmedabad stadium was hostile towards Hardik Pandya throughout the game, with the crowd consistently booing him. The animosity stemmed from resentment towards Pandya for his departure from Gujarat Titans and return to Mumbai Indians.

Meanwhile, in a recent video going viral on social media, fans could be heard making derogatory remarks such as 'chapri, chapri' as he was leaving the ground.

Talking about the match, Hardik Pandya leading MI, won the toss and opted to let GT have a go at batting first. Jasprit Bumrah was on fire with the ball, picking up 3 wickets for a mere 14 runs, while Gerald Coetzee got two wickets, restricting GT to 168 runs. Sai Sudharshan stole the show for GT, knocking 45 runs off 39 balls.

Azmatullah Omarzai struck early for GT, sending Ishan Kishan back to the pavilion for a four-ball duck in just the fourth delivery of the first over, and then dismissing Naman Dhir in the third over. However, Rohit Sharma (43) and Dewald Brevis (46), the Impact Player, led a spirited comeback for MI.

Meanwhile, in the last over, MI found themselves needing 19 runs to win with only seven wickets in hand. Under immense pressure, Hardik stepped up and smashed a six and a four off the first two deliveries.

However, Umesh Yadav shattered MI's hopes by dismissing Pandya on the third ball, and then Piyush Chawla on the next, securing a dramatic win for Gujarat Titans
