Shakib Al Hasan has emerged as an unlikely candidate to feature in Bangladesh’s upcoming home T20I series against Zimbabwe in its entirety. The five games, set to be staged in May, will serve as some of Bangladesh’s final set of fixtures prior to the T20 World Cup 2024 in June.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has already announced a 17-player squad for the preparation of the series against Zimbabwe, which already includes the notable omission of Shakib Al Hasan as well as CSK’s IPL 2024 cricketer Mustafizur Rahman.

Shakib likely to have minimal presence for ZIM T20Is

BCB chief selector Gazi Ashraf Hossain has confirmed that Shakib Al Hasan is currently in USA and will be returning to Bangladesh towards to end of April only to play a couple of Dhaka Premier League matches for the Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Cricket Club.

The senior BCB official further stated that the cricket board will be announcing Bangladesh’s squad for the series against Zimbabwe on April 28, where they will also be confirming Shakib Al Hasan’s exact availability for the team’s upcoming home games.

The legendary all-rounder featured in Bangladesh’s series-deciding second Test match against Sri Lanka at Chattogram earlier this month.

While the 37-year-old failed to put up a match-winning exhibition, the cricketer continues to remain a cogent force in Bangladesh’s setup, and will likely make a cut into the national squad for this year’s T20 World Cup 2024 in the West Indies.

As of now, the Bangladesh cricket team is slated to face Zimbabwe in a series of five T20I matches between May 3 and May 12.

The first three fixtures will be staged at Chattogram’s Zohur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium before the action will shift to the iconic Sher-e-Bangla Stadium in Mirpur for the final two games.
