U-23 players of the city face a disciplinary probe after the Saurashtra Cricket Association (SCA) launched an investigation over liquor bottles found while the cricketers were travelling back to Rajkot from Chandigarh.

The probe was launched on Monday (January 29) after an incident that occurred four days earlier when Saurashtra U-23 players went celebrating their victory over Chandigarh in the CK Nayudu Trophy, stated sources privy to the development within SCA as reported by PTI.

The SCA officials were informed of the sizeable amount of liquor that was detected in the cargo area of the plane that the Saurashtra side was to board. The liquor was subsequently seized by airport authorities with further legal action due.

Saurashtra Probes U-23 Players For Liquor

"There has been an alleged incident at Chandigarh that was brought to notice of Saurashtra Cricket Association," said the SCA in a statement, as quoted by PTI.

"The alleged incident is unfortunate. The Ethics and Disciplinary Committee and the Apex Council of Saurashtra Cricket Association will make in-depth examine of the incident and take proper disciplinary action."

Notably, Gujarat is a dry state and travellers are not allowed to carry alcohol into the state. However, there is permission issued by the state government for tourists to purchase alcohol from its own dedicated outlets.

But the news of U-23 players indulging in alcohol after the win in the CK Nayudu Trophy raises a genuine question mark on the disciplines of the players and creates ethical concerns for the Saurashtra Cricket Association.

The SCA could suspend players if proven masterminds of the shocking incident which was caught in Chandigarh, harming their chances of higher reckoning into a strong Ranji Trophy side the state fields, including Indian stalwarts such as Cheteshwar Pujara and Jaydev Unadkat.
