Delhi Capitals Director of Cricket Sourav Ganguly has confirmed that Rishabh Pant will be back to lead the franchise in the 2024 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Back in December 2022, Pant was involved in a near fatal car crash, one which left him with numerous bruises and body injuries.

The dashing wicketkeeper-batsman was subsequently taken to intense medical care, which forced him out of India’s entire 2023 cricketing calendar as well as the entire IPL 2023 season for Delhi Capitals. Pant spent much of his time rehabilitating himself at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, as he continues to make slow yet steady recovery in his quest of a national comeback.

Sourav Ganguly confirms Rishabh Pant’s IPL return

Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly, who is currently serving the Delhi Capitals as its Director of Cricket, has confirmed that Rishabh Pant will be back to his playing duties for the franchise in IPL 2024.

Moreover, Ganguly also added that Pant will retain his leadership role, thus taking over from David Warner who led the side in this year’s 2023 edition.

While speaking with India Today, the cricketer-turned-administrator said:

“Rishabh Pant is in good shape. He will play from next season. He will not practice now. He is here till 11th November. We had a discussion about the team with Rishabh Pant as he is the captain of the team, considering the upcoming auctions.”

Rishabh Pant made his IPL debut for the franchise back in 2016 as a 19-year-old. The Delhi Capitals zealot has represented them in nearly 100 matches and has minted 2,838 runs at an average of over 34.

The attacking left-handed batter has also turned up for Team India in 33 Tests, 30 ODIs and 66 additional T20I matches. Pant emerged as one of the standout performers of India’s twin Test series wins in Australia, and also paved the way for his nation’s historic bilateral ODI series triumph in England in 2022.
