Delhi Capitals (DC) eked out a nail-biting four-run victory over Gujarat Titans (GT) in Match 40 of the IPL 2024 at Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Wednesday.

Put into bat first, Delhi Capitals set the scoreboard on fire, amassing a formidable total of 224/4, thanks to a whirlwind 88 off 43 balls from skipper Rishabh Pant and a solid 66 off 43 by Axar Patel, with explosive contributions from Jake Fraser-McGurk and Tristan Stubbs.

Chasing a colossal target, Gujarat Titans' response was anchored by Wriddhiman Saha and Sai Sudharsan after a quick exit by captain Shubman Gill.

However, despite their efforts, they both departed in rapid succession. David Miller’s blistering fifty and Rashid Khan's last-ditch heroics brought the Titans tantalizingly close, but they ultimately fell short by a whisker, missing the mark by just four runs.

Here’s the timeline of how DC vs GT panned out in Delhi-

Fraser-McGurk and Shaw Start Brightly But Depart Quickly

Delhi Capitals began their innings with a strong intent after being put to bat first. Openers, Jake Fraser-McGurk and Prithvi Shaw, came out swinging, quickly racking up 35 runs.

Fraser-McGurk contributed a brisk 23 runs from just 14 balls, while Shaw added 11 from 7 balls, both hitting several impressive boundaries.

However, their momentum was abruptly halted by Sandeep Warrier, who struck thrice in the Powerplay, reducing DC to 44/3.

Steady Rebuild By Axar Patel and Rishabh Pant

With the top order back in the pavillion early, it was up to Axar Patel, promoted to number 3, and captain Rishabh Pant to stabilize the innings. The pair excelled in their roles, putting together a crucial 113-run stand for the fourth wicket.

Axar was particularly aggressive, smashing 66 runs off 43 balls, which included 5 fours and 4 sixes, marking his highest score in the IPL.

Pant complemented him well, playing a captain's knock of an unbeaten 88 from 43 deliveries, filled with 5 fours and 8 sixes, effectively dismantling the Gujarat Titans' (GT) bowling attack.

Tristan Stubbs Provides the Final Flourish

Despite the fall of Axar Patel to Noor Ahmad in the 17th over, the scoring pace did not diminish. Tristan Stubbs joined Pant and wasted no time, quickly amassing 26 runs off just 7 balls, providing a fiery finish to the innings.

Early Setback and Recovery by Wriddhiman Saha and Sai Sudharsan

Gujarat Titans started their pursuit of a formidable target of 224 with intent but suffered an early blow, losing captain Shubman Gill for a mere 6 runs off 5 balls.

However, the initial setback was quickly offset by Wriddhiman Saha and Sai Sudharsan, who put together an impressive 82-run partnership for the second wicket.

Saha played a crucial innings of 39 off 25 balls, while Sudharsan added a significant 65 off 39 balls, anchoring the middle order and keeping the run rate within reach.

Fiery Finish by David Miller and Valiant Effort by Rashid Khan

Post the dismissals of Saha and Sudharsan, David Miller stepped up to the crease, delivering a blistering performance with 55 runs from just 23 balls, including six fours and three sixes.

His aggressive batting brought Gujarat within striking distance of the target. The lower order, including Sai Kishore who contributed a quick 13 off 6, continued the assault, taking the game down to the wire.

The final over drama peaked with Gujarat needing 19 runs off the last 6 balls. This is when Rashid Khan displayed his fireworks as he started the over with consecutive boundaries and smashed the penultimate ball for a six, bringing the game down to five off the final ball.

However, he failed to hit the winning shot and stayed unbeaten on 21* off 11 as GT fell short by 4 runs.
