Australian stumper Beth Mooney has been re-appointed as Gujarat Giants captain for the upcoming Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024 season. The T20 veteran was also slated to lead the franchise in the inaugural WPL season last year, however, she had to opt out of the tournament after the first game owing to an injury.

Sneh Rana, who led the Gujarat Giants group in Mooney’s absence, has retained her original role as vice-captain of the team for this year’s WPL event.

Beth Mooney will be leading the Gujarat Giants franchise in this year’s WPL 2024, while last season’s skipper Sneh Rana will be serving as her deputy. Mooney was retained by the Giants franchise a few months ago, even though she had to skip a majority of their WPL campaign last year owing to an injury.

The 30-year-old Australian cricketer expressed her delight of re-joining the Gujarat Giants group, and also expressed her confidence for a better team performance this time around.

“I am delighted to be back with Gujarat Giants and grateful for the team’s trust in me. We have a fantastic squad, and I am confident we will put up a good show,” Mooney said during a press release.

With Sneh Rana as Gujarat Giants leader after Beth Mooney’s early exit, the team finished at the bottom of the WPL 2023 points table, securing just two wins out of their eight league fixtures.

As of now, the Giants group is slated to launch its WPL 2024 campaign with a match against defending champions Mumbai Indians. The much-awaited contest will be staged on February 25 and will be hosted by the iconic M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
