Shubman Gill led Gujarat Titans to their fourth win of the IPL 2024 season, this time mauling Punjab Kings in a final-over thriller at Mullanpur on April 21. The opening batter himself scored a steady 35 at the top before IPL cult hero Rahul Tewatia sealed the run-chase with five balls to spare.

After the match, Gill shared his “exciting” journey as captain so far, and discussed his dismissal at the hands of Punjab Kings’ part-timer Liam Livingstone.

Shubman Gill says overrate only concern in captaincy

Shubman Gill was appointed as Gujarat Titans captain after the sudden departure of Hardik Pandya to Mumbai Indians. Under his leadership, the Titans have secured four wins from eight league fixtures, with their latest triumph over Punjab Kings taking them to number sixth position on the IPL 2024 points table.

Gill claimed that he has enjoyed his captaincy journey so far, and he has also not allowed the additional responsibility to hamper his batting. While speaking during the post-match presentation ceremony, the 24-year-old cricketer said:

“Very exciting for me in this (captain's) role. It's exciting to take up the role. Apart from the overrate, most of the things have been good to me. I am concentrating on my batting and not allowing the captaincy to come in its way while batting.”

Gill addresses middle-order collapse

Shubman Gill also addressed his team’s middle-order batting collapse, claiming that his visiting troops should have sealed the game much earlier in the run-chase. He added:

“Definitely, we would have loved to finish it a bit earlier. But good to get those 2 points.”

Gill, who scored a splendid 35 at the top, was dismissed at the hands of Punjab Kings’ part-time spinner Liam Livingstone at the halfway stage of the innings. Explaining his dismissal, the Titans skipper said:

“Just that he (Liam Livingstone) was rushing me on there but the ball that I got out, I would have made that decision even without that bit.”

Shubman Gill will now lead his Gujarat Titans troops against Delhi Capitals in match number 40 of the IPL 2024 season. The much-awaited contest will be staged at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on April 24.
