'World Class…' - Gary Kirsten Hails Shubman Gill, Injured Shami Ahead Of GT Vs CSK

Shubman Gill has failed to notch up a single 50-plus score in his past five innings, and has tallied a below-par haul of 322 runs this Indian Premier League (IPL 2024) season at an average of 32.20.

In a rather high-scoring season, the dashing opener has also failed to meet the expected strike-rate standards, striking at just 137 at a time when 150-plus rates have become a norm off late.

Despite his ailing form with the bat, the dashing opener recently received the backing from none other than Gujarat Titans (GT) batting coach Gary Kirsten. The former South African cricketer hailed the Titans opener, and also addressed Mohammed Shami’s absence from the team owing to the speedster’s injury.

Gary Kirsten hails Shubman Gill, Mohammed Shami

A day prior to Gujarat Titans’ home game against defending champions CSK, batting coach Gary Kirsten described struggling opener Shubman Gill a ‘world-class’ player who is due to put up a good performance or two in their upcoming games.

“He's a world-class player, I have no doubt that in the next three games he's going to put in one or two really good performances," the GT coach mentioned.

Kirsten, who coached Team India to 2011 World Cup glory, also addressed Mohammed Shami’s injury-struck absence from the Gujarat Titans setup this IPL 2024 season. The former South African cricketer praised Shami by signifying his value for the franchise.

“I think you do miss players. Obviously, someone like a Shami who was big for us in the last two years, that kind of a player is difficult to replace. You can't replace world-class bowlers like that," he added.

Under the leadership of Shubman Gill, the Gujarat Titans franchise is currently languishing at the bottom of the 10-team IPL 2024 points table. They have secured just four wins and coped seven defeats from 11 league fixtures.

Shubman Gill and co. will now go up against defending champions CSK on May 10 at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium.
