Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan is optimistic about his side’s chances for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024 in West Indies and United States. The legendary all-rounder believes the conditions in the Caribbean will suit Bangladesh’s style of play, and the team’s T20I division has also been performing well since the past 12 months.

Under Shakib Al Hasan, Bangladesh secured just two wins from nine fixtures at the 2023 World Cup in India a couple of months ago. The team finished at number eight on the points table, and barely managed to qualify for the 2025 Champions Trophy.

Bangladesh also failed to go past the Group stage hurdle at the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia, as they sustained crushing defeats to South Africa and Pakistan.

Despite their recent struggles in ICC events, Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan believes the current team can perform well at the 2024 T20 World Cup owing to their T20I form and familiarity with playing conditions in the West Indies.

“The tournament will take place in the US and the West Indies. The condition will suit our style of cricket. So, we have a good chance. We have been playing really well in T20s in the last one year. The team is well-balanced, it's also in a good rhythm. Everyone's playing well. The team played well in New Zealand as well. Of course, we have a lot of expectations," Shakib said, who recently won the Magura seat in the general election of Bangladesh.

As per the ICC listings, Bangladesh are placed in Group D alongside Nepal, Netherlands, continental rivals Sri Lanka and tournament-contender South Africa. The T20 World Cup 2024 itself will be played in June this year across several West Indies and United States venues and Bangladesh’s opening fixture will take place in Texas against Sri Lanka.

Shakib Al Hasan, meanwhile, is currently slated to represent the Rangpur Riders franchise in the upcoming Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) 2024 season. The seven-team event will commence from January 19 onwards, while Shakib’s Rangpur Riders will face Fortune Barishal the following day in Dhaka.
