'There Is Nothing But Low Scores', Ex-KKR Star On Shubman Gill's Abysmal T20I Form

Renowned cricket analyst Aakash Chopra has raised concerns over the inconsistent T20 International (T20I) performances of Shubman Gill, despite the young opener's stellar showing in the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL).

Gill, who secured the Orange Cap by amassing 890 runs for the Gujarat Titans, has faced challenges in the T20I format, with notable inconsistencies in his scores.

Inconsistency and Left-Arm Spin Troubles: Aakash Chopra Analyzes Gill's T20I Performance

Chopra, expressing his observations on his YouTube channel, pointed out,

"There is inconsistency when it comes to Shubman Gill's T20I numbers. There are 1-2 big knocks, but around it, there is nothing but low scores. Also, Gill against a left-arm spin bowler, seems like there is an issue. According to me, he is trapped by the left-arm spinners inside the powerplay."

Highlighting a specific instance from the recent T20I series against South Africa, Chopra noted Gill's dismissal in the third game in Johannesburg, stating,

"Gill was trapped in front LBW by left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj during powerplay while he is trying to attempt a sweep shot. However, replays later showed that Gill would have survived if he had taken a review since the ball was missing the stumps."

Chopra emphasized the need for Gill to address this vulnerability, especially with the T20 World Cup looming.

"While the series against South Africa is over, India just has three more T20Is to go before the T20 World Cup 2024. For now, despite his poor run of form, Shubman might make it to the squad, but it remains a worry for India," he added.

Tilak Varma's Challenges and Competition for T20 World Cup Spots

Aakash Chopra also turned his attention to young talent Tilak Varma, expressing concerns about missed opportunities and a dip in form.

"Tilak Varma is missing opportunities. He will have to be careful because his performance in Ireland was not good, and even here he is missing out while batting at No.3. Position No.3 is already a difficult place to be because it is still Kohli's. I think that both Rohit and Kohli will play in the upcoming T20 World Cup," Chopra added.

Tilak Varma, who initially showcased promise by finishing as India's leading run-scorer in a T20I series against the West Indies, has struggled to maintain consistency.

Adding to the concern is Shubman Gill's recent performance in the T20I series against South Africa, where he recorded scores of 0 and 8, both dismissals coming via LBW. With only four double-digit scores in 13 innings and a struggle against left-arm spinners, Gill's T20I journey raises questions despite his impressive IPL record.

As India approaches the T20 World Cup 2024, Chopra highlighted the competition for spots, mentioning contenders like Ishan Kishan and Ruturaj Gaikwad at the top. While acknowledging Shubman Gill's potential inclusion despite his T20I struggles, Chopra stressed the importance of time in shaping the final squad for the upcoming big tournament.
