'Sloppy Is The Word' - English Hero Slams Shreyas Iyer After Lacklustre 27 In Vizag Test

A scratchy and unconvincing knock of 27 in the first-innings of the second Test against England in Vizag piled on the scrutiny on Indian middle-order player Shreyas Iyer as Kevin Pietersen dig into the faltering player, whose place appears increasingly on the line amidst persistent struggles.

While looking out of depth and technique to counter James Anderson and his short-pitched deliveries, the Mumbaikar also shaped up in a rather disappointing fashion versus the opposition's inexperienced tweakers.

Eventually out under-edging a short-ball from left-arm spinner Tom Hartley in the critical second session, Pietersen, the former England batter, wondered in what mindset Iyer is right now. The right-hander didn't inspire much confidence in the middle and could be beating himself for missing out when Virat Kohli and KL Rahul return to the side.

Pietersen Slams Shreyas Iyer

"Listen, when Kohli comes back and other guys (KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja) come back and these are the days these boys are going to look back and go, 'oh why did I not get a hundred? I had the opportunity to get the hundred'. And when you are sloppy like that, getting out doesn't impress me at all," Pietersen told Jio Cinema.

Despite starting off his Test career in a highly encouraging manner with a debut century against New Zealand in November 2021, Iyer finds himself in a corner with his average falling below 40 since the tour of South Africa in December-January.

The 29-year-old is averaging 37.23 after 14 Tests with no half-century made in his last 12 innings for India.
