Former Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Zaka Ashraf has criticized the swift decision to remove Shaheen Shah Afridi from captaincy and reinstate Babar Azam as the captain of the national cricket team.

Ashraf expressed his concerns during an Iftar party in Lahore, emphasizing that

"Shaheen should have been given some more time, at least one year so that his performance [as skipper] could be analyzed before taking any decision in this connection."

He cited Afridi's recent appointment and subsequent series loss in New Zealand as reasons for needing more evaluation time.

Ashraf backs decision to remove Babar as captain

During Ashraf's tenure as PCB chief, Babar Azam relinquished the captaincy of all three formats, leading to Shaheen Afridi's appointment as T20 skipper.

However, after a disappointing performance in New Zealand, the PCB opted to bring back Babar as the captain.

Ashraf highlighted: "We decided to change Babar as captain because though he is the best batsman in the world we observed that he as captain looked under pressure. So we replaced him [with Shaheen] so that he can fully concentrate on his batting."

Ashraf also criticized the composition of the recently announced national selection committee, pointing out the need for more representation from all provinces. He urged for a more inclusive selection process.

In addition, Ashraf called for transparency regarding an inquiry he initiated against Saya Corporation, a players' agent company with ties to numerous Pakistani cricketers, including Babar Azam. He emphasized the need for the PCB to inquire's report publicly.

The PCB's decision to remove Afridi as captain has stirred reactions, with Afridi himself posting a cryptic message on social media.

Babar Azam's captaincy will resume with upcoming series against New Zealand and England, leading to the T20 World Cup 2024.
