Pakistan cricket team’s newest T20 captain Shaheen Shah Afridi recently shed light on the importance of franchise cricket in Pakistan, the Pakistan Super League amid the poor political conditions in the country.

Pakistan’s World Cup-winning captain and former Prime Minister Imran Khan was recently arrested and later released on bail, which caused nationwide protests and turmoil.

Shaheen Afridi talked about the recently held elections in the country and how in between the country’s struggle with finances and political tensions, the entertainment provided by Cricket gives people immense happiness.

Afridi also looked forward to the crowds turning back to the stadium as the ninth season of Pakistan super league started being conducted in full swing.

Shaheen also discussed how after becoming the captain and leading a squad has given him more insightful knowledge about the sport. He admitted that before becoming the captain of the Pakistan team, he needed to learn a lot of basic things about the game. While talking to ESPNcricinfo, Shaheen Afridi said,

"The way the country's situation is. The PSL and cricket is something that makes people happy. Elections just got over, so I'm hopeful the crowds will turn up and support cricket. When I wasn't captain, I didn't know a lot of things. Some of them are so basic I don't even want to tell you about them. When you're a bowler you only focus on yourself and your bowling.”

He further added,

"When you're captain, the 11 who play and the five sitting on the bench are all your players. You have to treat them as individuals, talk to them all, and keep a friendly atmosphere.”

Shaheen Afridi is currently leading Lahore Qalandars in the PSL 2024, and the team is currently struggling to look for their first win in the tournament after losing their first two matches.
