Mumbai Indians' newly appointed skipper Hardik Pandya was facing a continuous chorus of 'boos' after he took the captaincy from Rohit Sharma ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2024).

The all-rounder has had a challenging start to his leadership role with Mumbai Indians suffering three consecutive defeats in initial matches.

The echoes of dislike for Pandya after his appointment as captain started in the opening match against Gujarat Titans (GT) and followed in the subsequent fixture they played against Sunrisers Hyderabad and Rajasthan Royals (RR).

Sourav Ganguly Supports Hardik Pandya

Former Indian cricketer Sourav Ganguly never removes himself from answering tricky questions. In the press conference that had taken place ahead of the match of Delhi Capitals against Mumbai Indians, he was asked about the most controversial topic of cricket today which is the situation Hardik Pandya is facing after the change of captaincy.

When Sourav Ganguly was asked about the situation that Hardik Pandya is facing he answered saying it was not the all-rounder's fault that he was given MI captaincy. The decision was made by the owners.

"Fans shouldn't boo Hardik Pandya, it's not correct. The franchise has appointed him captain. That's what happens in sports, whether you captain India or you captain your franchise, you are appointed as captain," Sourav said in the pre-match press conference.

He also added that Rohit Sharma as a player has a different class and temperament and he has performed to his best abilities not just as a player but as well as the former captain of Mumbai.

"Rohit Sharma is a different class. His performance for this franchise, his performance for India, has been on a different level, as captain and as a player. It's not Hardik's fault that he has been appointed as captain," he added.

Mumbai Indians will play its next match against Delhi Capitals at Wankhede Stadium on April 6, 2024. After the return of dynamic batter Suryakumar Yadav to the Mumbai Indians camp the team will try to come back stronger after losing three consecutive matches.
