Rajasthan Royals all-rounder Riyan Parag started his Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 campaign on a sensational note as he played a quick-fire knock of 43 runs off 29 deliveries against Lucknow Super Giants at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium, Jaipur on Sunday.

Parag, the Assam cricketer, carried on his form from the Ranji Trophy 2023-24 season to display his brilliance in the inaugural match of the lucrative tournament. His fiery knock was laced with one boundary and three sixes, allowing the home franchise, post a challenging total of 193/4 after opting to bat.

The 22-year-old credited the Rajasthan Royals management, including director of cricket and head coach Kumar Sangakkara and captain Sanju Samson, for giving him a clarity about his role ahead of the season.

"The main goal was to take the game deep, the wicket was staying very low and was assisting the spinners," Parag said.

"My mindset was simple, the way I play my domestic game, I just practiced well in the last 10 days and implemented it on the ground today. Sanga (Kumar Sangakkara) was pretty clear, I had a chat with him, Sanju (Sanju Samson) bhaiya and the management, I wanted that clarity, I had played at 4 in the domestic season," he added.

Parag was in red-hot form during the Ranji Trophy 2023-24 and will look to replicate it in the ongoing IPL. He amassed 378 runs in four matches with the highest score of 155 and was the second highest run scorer for his state team after Rahul Hazarika.
