'MS Dhoni Plays My Father's Role': Matheesha Pathirana On His Bond With CSK Legend

Sri Lankan pace bowling sensation Matheesha Pathirana recently opened up about his deep admiration for MS Dhoni, whom he regards as a 'father' figure. 

Pathirana's journey with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) began in 2022, and he made his Indian Premier League (IPL) debut under Dhoni's leadership against Gujarat Titans (GT) that same year. 

Since then, Dhoni, who led CSK to five IPL titles, has played a pivotal role in Pathirana's development, offering invaluable advice and guidance.

Describing MS Dhoni's influence on his cricketing career, Pathirana emphasized that the legendary keeper impact goes beyond imparting significant lessons; rather, he focuses on instilling confidence by offering small but meaningful insights. 

Pathirana expressed gratitude for Dhoni's mentorship, acknowledging the positive impact it has had on his performance and mindset on the field.

Unfortunately, Pathirana had to bid farewell to the Yellow Army due to a hamstring injury. Despite his departure, his contribution to the team was substantial, having secured 13 wickets in just six matches this year. 

As he heads back to Sri Lanka for further treatment, Pathirana leaves behind an impressive track record as their second highest wicket-taker in the IPL 2024 season.

CSK has faced significant setbacks with the unexpected departures of key players. Recently, left-arm pacer Mustafizur Rahman left the squad to fulfill international commitments for Bangladesh, while Deepak Chahar has been sidelined due to injuries. 

Both Mustafizur and Chahar played crucial roles in the team's bowling department, with Rehman being the highest wicket-taker, ahead of Pathirana. 

With their absence and Pathirana's departure, CSK's campaign in the IPL has become even more challenging, especially as they strive to secure a spot in the playoffs amidst tough competition.
