England are currently having a horrible World Cup 2023 campaign in India. The defending champions have suffered a series of defeats and have only a solitary win out of the six games they have played so far in the tournament. As a result, Jos Buttler-led unit are pretty much out of the semi-final race and are currently sitting at the bottom of the points table.

This predicament has sparked some intense criticism of the team and the management. Additionally, things can go from bad to worse for England as they are also at the risk of missing out on qualification for the forthcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan.

The qualification for the next 50-over global event is at stake in the ongoing World Cup in India. with hosts Pakistan joined by the seven highest finishers in the World Cup league stage.

Mark Wood Defends Coach Matthew Mott Amid England's World Cup Humiliation

England’s white ball coach Matthew Mott has been put under the firing line following England’s poor performance in the World Cup. England pacer Mark Wood comes out in support of his coach.

Speaking to BBC Sport ahead of the Saturday clash against Australia, Wood claimed that one should not only blame the coach and captain but the players should also take the responsibility for the poor outcomes in the ongoing World Cup.

“If the players are looking at other people then that’s the players’ fault. As a player you have got everything you need, the coach can only set about - we get tactics, we get analysts. So you can’t pin everything on the coach and captain. Sometimes the players have to look at themselves and give a little bit of responsibility,” Wood said.

Wood further admitted that he has been very far from his best with his bowling in this World Cup. The ace pacer has taken only four wickets from the six games he has played in the tournament at an average of almost 70.

“I have not performed well enough in this World Cup. I’m frustrated, I’m gutted about it you know, I feel like you know I’ve let some people down at home and things like that, and that hurts me,” Wood added.

With three more matches in hand England would like to get back to winning ways as soon as possible and climb up the ladder to finish in the top eight at the end of the league stage. They will be up against a high-flying Australia in their next match on Saturday, November 4th at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
