Former Sri Lankan skipper and global head of performance of Mumbai Indians (MI) Mahela Jayawardene has called Indian skipper Rohit Sharma as an Instinctive captain, who understands what needs to be done.

In an exclusive interview with RevSportz, Jayawardene was asked to share his thoughts on Rohit as captain.

Jayawardene, who has closely observed Rohit's captaincy journey since joining MI in 2016, shared his insights.

According to Jayawardene, Rohit Sharma possesses a deep understanding of the game and is tactically astute. He described Rohit as an instinctive captain who can make decisions on the field as the situation demands.

Jayawardene noted that Rohit prepares meticulously for matches and tournaments, displaying the qualities of a great captain who is ready for any situation.

"He’s a good thinker of the game and he understands what needs to be done. Tactically, he’s savvy. He’s a much more instinctive captain. But he does prepare himself pretty well. I mean, when he’s going into matches and tournaments, that preparation is there as a captain. So, but, you know, like any good captain, you need to play the moment. And I think that’s what he does,"  said Mahela Jayawardene in RevSportz show "Backstage with Boria".

Rohit's impact on Mumbai Indians' fortunes was profound, beginning in 2013 when he took over the captaincy mid-season.

Under his leadership, the team transformed from a title-less side to one that has secured five IPL championships.

Big responsibility on Rohit's shoulders

His captaincy journey continued to flourish when he was appointed India's full-time white-ball captain in 2021, followed by his role as Test skipper in 2022, succeeding Virat Kohli.

Rohit's calm and composed demeanor on the field and his knack for making instinctive decisions that benefit the team, often gets acknowledged.

At the age of 36, this World Cup might mark Rohit's final appearance as both captain and player.

Having already guided India to triumph in two Asia Cup competitions, cricket fans across India eagerly await Rohit's pursuit of cricket's most coveted trophy.
