On September 13, Central Zone batter Yash Rathod narrowly missed out on a maiden double ton in the ongoing Duleep Trophy final against South Zone in Bengaluru.
The 25-year-old right-hander was dismissed for a career-best 194, an innings that helped his team cross the 500-run mark and all but secure control of the match. But the question is, who is Yash Rathod?
Yash Rathod's Journey So Far In Domestic Cricket
Born in Nagpur on 16 May 2000, Rathod rose through Vidarbha’s ranks before gaining national attention. He was selected in India’s squad for the 2019 ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup in Bangladesh, where he made his List A debut against Nepal. Two years later, he made his T20 debut for Vidarbha in the 2020–21 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
While he has experience across formats, Rathod has built his reputation primarily in red-ball cricket, where his patience and technique have stood out.
Notably, Rathod has been one of the most consistent performers in domestic circuit. Across 21 first-class matches, he has scored 1,866 runs at an average of over 50, including seven centuries and eight fifties. His previous best score before the Duleep final was 151.
It is worth mentioning that Rathod enjoyed a breakthrough season in the recent 2024–25 Ranji Trophy, finishing as the tournament’s highest run-getter. Rathod piled up 960 runs in 10 matches and 18 innings, averaging 53.33, while playing for Vidarbha. In the tournament, he struck five centuries and three half-centuries and played a key role in Vidarbha’s title-winning campaign.
Meanwhile, Central Zone captain Rajat Patidar lauded Rathod’s ability against spin. In a video shared by the Vidarbha Cricket Association, he said, "He has one of the best techique to play with spin bowl."
Yash Rathod Sustains Red-Hot Form In Duleep Trophy
Rathod has carried that form into the 2025 Duleep Trophy. In the quarter-final against North East Zone, he made 87 and 78*. However, he stumbled against West Zone in the semi-final but saved his best for the final.
Batting at number five, he stitched crucial partnerships, 167 runs with skipper Rajat Patidar (101) and another 176 runs with Saransh Jain (69). His knock of 194 off 286 balls (17 fours, 2 sixes) was described as one of the best innings of the season, even though he fell short of a double century when Gurjapneet Singh bowled him in the second session of Day 3.
