Rohit Sharma burst onto international circuit at the 2007 T20 World Cup, where his match-winning efforts against South Africa and Pakistan paved way for India’s historic title triumph. The prodigious talent batted with the same intent in IPL, first for Deccan Chargers and later on for Mumbai Indians, where he took over leadership reigns from Ricky Ponting midway into the 2013 season.

His sudden appointment as Mumbai Indians captain turned out to be a historic one for the franchise as he led them to five IPL trophies and a Champions League title in his maiden leadership attempt.

As it turned out, the cricketer had no qualms or second-thoughts before accepting the high-profile role. In a 10-year-old video circulating around social media, a young Rohit Sharma can be seen narrating his mindset at the time of being offered captaincy, and why he was ready to replace one of the greatest leaders of all time, Ricky Ponting.

When Rohit Sharma recalled his captaincy offer

Back in 2013, shortly after getting appointed as Mumbai Indians’ new captain, Rohit Sharma got down for an interview where he eloquently revealed the details of how his newfound leadership role was extended to him by the team management.

The cricketer said that it was then coach John Wright and Anil Kumble who had approached him with the offer. He added that he instantly accepted the proposal because he wanted to take up new responsibilities and challenges at that time of his career.

Rohit Sharma was eventually appointed as Team India’s all-format skipper in late 2021, taking over the role from fellow senior man Virat Kohli. So far, the batting veteran has led his side to unprecedented success at home, as well as a rare ODI series win in England.

Sharma also led the ‘Men in Blue’ to two Asia Cup titles, in 2018 and 2023, and is currently serving the team at the 2023 World Cup.
