New Zealand started their ICC T20 World Cup 2022 campaign with a crucial win over defending champions Australia on Saturday (October 22). Heading into their second Super 12 match against Afghanistan, the Kane Williamson-led side received good news regarding all-rounder Daryl Mitchell.

As per a report in stuff.nz, Mitchell is likely to return to playing XI after recovering from a finger injury. The 31-year-old broke his finger in training ahead of New Zealand's T20 tri-nation series earlier this month.

Trent Boult confirmed that his Northern District teammate was looking forward to playing and had a couple of good practice sessions over the weekend.  Last week, coach Gary Stead revealed that Mark Chapman could be axed if Mitchell makes a comeback to the side on Wednesday.

In the last T20 World Cup in 2021, Mitchell slammed 208 runs in seven games, which propelled the Black Caps into the final of the tournament, where they lost to eventual winners Australia.

His knocks against India in the Super 12 stage, and the semi-finals versus England, single-handedly turned the game in his team's favour.
