Newly appointed South Africa's limited-overs coach Rob Walter has opened the door for ex-Proteas skipper Faf du Plessis' return to the national team.

Despite being among T20’s most consistent run-scorers and, notably, regularly finishing in the IPL’s second top batter in the 2021 edition, Du Plessis was frozen out of international white-ball cricket since he retired from Test cricket in 2021.

Faf announced his Test retirement, stating that he wants to focus more on T20s. However, despite making his priorities public, du Plessis hasn’t represented South Africa in white-ball cricket since Test retirement.

In his autobiography, Faf blamed former head coach Mark Boucher for his early exit from Test cricket and for ignoring him for the shorter formats.

Speaking to the Rapport newspaper, new Proteas head coach Walter stated that he's ready to welcome Faf back in South Africa's white-ball setup as he continues to be a world beater in the limited-overs cricket.

"Faf has not retired yet. He is still playing very good T20 cricket. He will build his future around T20 leagues. I haven’t spoken to him at all yet, but if he would like to talk about the possibility of playing for South Africa again, I would be open to that," said Rob Walter.

The former South African captain continues to be a hotshot in T20 leagues across the globe. However, for some unknown reasons, he has been continuously ignored by Cricket South Africa. If Walter manages to pull Faf back into the Proteas mix then it will help the team immensely.
