On April 18, 2008, the cricketing world witnessed the dawn of a new era with the inauguration of the Indian Premier League (IPL), featuring the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).

Amidst the anticipation surrounding the league's debut and its potential impact on cricket's future, KKR's Brendon McCullum swiftly stole the spotlight with a historic knock that marked a turning point in his career and ignited the excitement of the cricketing extravaganza.

McCullum's onslaught began with ferocious strokes, effortlessly dispatching deliveries from Zaheer Khan and Praveen Kumar to all corners of the ground. While the focus initially rested on Sourav Ganguly, McCullum's relentless scoring kept the momentum flowing. Despite Zaheer claiming Ganguly's wicket in the sixth over, McCullum continued his onslaught and scored the first half-century in the IPL.

Ponting contributed 20 runs from 20 deliveries before falling to Jacques Kallis in the 13th over. As a result, David Hussey joined McCullum, but it was the latter who dominated the proceedings.

The swashbuckling batter forged a 60-run stand with Hussey. McCullum's remarkable innings saw him not only achieve a splendid century but also surpass the 150-run milestone, remaining unbeaten at 158 runs from just 73 balls. He smashed an impressive total of 10 fours and an astounding 13 sixes.

His incredible knock enabled KKR to amass a formidable total of 222 for 3 in their allotted 20 overs. Defending the target, the Knights bowled out the opposition for a mere 82 runs, securing a resounding victory by 140 runs in the first-ever IPL match.
