Delhi Capitals (DC) are contemplating a strategic move to promote Axar Patel up the batting order following his outstanding form in recent matches. DC team director Sourav Ganguly has hinted at a possible promotion for the all-rounder in the batting order, citing his recent magnificent form.

Despite batting at No. 8 in the team's opening match against the Lucknow Super Giants, Axar displayed his proficiency, scoring a breezy 16 off just 11 balls. The former Indian captain acknowledged the left-arm spinner's batting abilities and hoped he could replicate his success with the bat for the team.

In a press conference on Monday, Ganguly lauded Axar's brilliant performance in the recent Test series against Australia, where he emerged as the second-leading run-scorer for India with 264 runs in five innings at an average of 88.

He remarked that the southpaw had batted exceptionally well on challenging tracks against Australia and that the team was considering a promotion for him in the batting order.

"Yeah that’s (batting) been discussed and Axar will bat up the order as his batting has improved. He has batted exceptionally well on difficult tracks against Australia and hopefully he can score runs for us," said Ganguly.

However, Ganguly also emphasized that T20 cricket demands clever bowling and situational awareness, particularly on flat tracks with a new ball.

"He has to get lines right and most of the time T20 is about clever bowling and being aware of situations because you play on flat tracks and ball is almost new," added the Indian veteran.

Nonetheless, the erstwhile cricketer remained optimistic about Axar's prospects and hoped his experience and abilities would help him strongly bounce back.

"So, it’s not easy unless it grips and turns which doesn’t happen most of the times. Hopefully, with all his experience and ability and what he has done for India, he will come back," concluded Ganguly.

Delhi Capitals will next lock horns with defending champions Gujarat Titans in Match 7 of IPL 2023 on Tuesday, April 4, at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.
