Former Australian cricketer, Ian Chappell, has strongly rebuked Australia's selection policies during the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy series against India. The visitors' substandard performance in the series, having already lost the first two Test matches, has prompted the Australian legend to blame their selection blunders for their lacklustre showing, potentially jeopardizing their contention for the World Test Championship final.

Chappell, in his criticism of Australia's team management, expressed his bewilderment at the exclusion of in-form batsman Travis Head from the playing XI for the first Test match in Nagpur. He further emphasized that a player who has been one of the top scorers in Australia should not be dropped so casually and should instead be given a chance to prove his mettle in Indian conditions.

Similarly, the renowned commentator was equally perplexed by the decision to debut spinner Matthew Kuhnemann in the second Test in New Delhi over Ashton Agar.

He argued that Kuhnemann's performance in the Sheffield Shield, while impressive, did not necessarily guarantee success against the best batsmen in Australia, let alone in Indian conditions.

The Aussie pointed out that selectors should have better judgement and not rely solely on statistics to determine a player's readiness for Test cricket.

Chappell's views on the selection blunders have highlighted the need for a more thoughtful and strategic approach to selecting the right players for international cricket. His concern over the selectors' reliance on past performances without considering the nuances of different playing conditions reflects the challenges faced by modern-day cricket.

It remains to be seen how Australia will fare in the upcoming third Test match in Indore, but Chappell's commentary underscores the importance of proper selection policies in the world of cricket.

The third Test will get underway on Wednesday, March 1. While Rohit Sharma will lead the Indian team, the Australian contingent will be led by Steve Smith in the absence of regular captain Pat Cummins, who has returned home to be with his ailing mother.
