Sunrisers Hyderabad disrupted Delhi Capitals newfound winning momentum with a nine-run triumph in match number 40 of the ongoing IPL 2023 season.

The win elevated the ‘Orange Army’ above Mumbai Indians on the points table, as they occupy eighth spot in the standings. The Aiden Markram-led side also managed to snap their three-game losing streak with their effort, as they extract revenge on the Capitals after their seven-run defeat against them earlier this week.

Klaasen Capitalises on Sharma’s blitz while others struggle

Abhishek Sharma, despite losing partners on the other end, found time to unleash a 36-ball 67 at the top. Meanwhile, the subsequent four batters, namely Mayank Agarwal, Rahul Tripathi, captain Aiden Markram and newly-demoted Harry Brook combined to form just 23 runs together as the SRH slumped to 83-4 within the first 10 overs.

Sharma’s lone hand upfront allowed Heinrich Klaasen to flourish in the death overs. The burly South African whacked an unbeaten 27-ball 53, an innings that charged up the SRH total to 197-6.

Mitchell Marsh was the pick of the bowlers from the Capitals camp, as the Australian-based all-rounder claimed four wickets while giving away just 27 runs from his four overs.

Delhi Capitals falls short despite Axar Patel’s late surge

Delhi Capitals captain and opener David Warner left his side’s quest within the opening over of the innings. SRH's ace speedster Bhuvneshwar Kumar cleaned-up the Australian veteran for a two-ball duck, before Phil Salt and number three Mitchell Marsh formed a 112-run second-wicket stand for the Capitals.

The two overseas stars cracked sparkling half-centuries and set up an exciting run-chase for the rest of the line-up. However, past demons returned to haunt the Capitals as they underwent a game-turning batting collapse thereafter.

Comfortably placed at 112-1 at one stage, the hosts slumped to 148-6 within the next six overs. Axar Patel struck some blows in his 14-ball 29*, but the Capitals eventually fell nine runs short of their target.

SRH spinner Mayank Markande contained the Marsh-Salt juggernaut with much success, giving away just 20 off his four overs with two wickets to his name.

The defeat keeps Capitals at the bottom of the points table, as they registered their sixth loss in eight games.
