Sanju Samson’s IPL journey has mainly revolved around Rajasthan Royals. Barring the two seasons he spent at the Delhi Capitals camp, the cricketer’s two separate stints at Royals’ base has turned out to be one of the most profitable signings for the franchise.

Having made his IPL debut in 2013 for them, the dynamic batter was elevated to the captaincy role in 2021. The following year, i.e., in just his second season as leader, he led his side to their first-ever final since the inaugural edition of the tournament.

As Rajasthan Royals brace themselves for their next chapter of the ongoing IPL 2023 season, Samson recalled the time how he first came to be known within the franchise’ fraternity.

Sanju Samson says Sreesanth took him to RR trials

In a recent interview on Star Sports, Sanju Samson revealed that former Indian pacer S Sreesanth took him to Rajasthan Royals trials ahead of the 2013 season. Sreesanth was already a part of the franchise back then, and the two cricketers were teammates for Kerala in BCCI’s domestic tournaments.

Samson stated that the former speedster guided him to Rajasthan Royals’ training base, where he was monitored under the watchful eyes of then captain Rahul Dravid.

He further stated that upon reviewing his performance, an impressed Dravid came up to him and offered him to play for the Royals. He said:

“Sreesanth took me to the RR trials. Dravid was there. I wasn't expecting much from the trials because I did not know what kind of players they were looking for. It was a two-day trial which however was very special as I have never batted like that ever again.

Then Rahul sir came and told me, "You are definitely doing great. Would you like to play for RR?" That gave me a huge confidence given that it came from Rahul sir. If a legend like him says, 'I'm good enough', then I am good enough.”

As it turned out, Samson is currently Rajasthan Royals’ most capped player, along with its highest run-getter. He is also second, behind late Shane Warne, in terms of leading the Royals unit in IPL.

The Kerala-based wicketkeeper will now captain his side in an away fixture against RCB on April 23.
