Rajasthan Royals suffered the worst powerplay start of the IPL 2023 season after taking field against defending champions Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad. The Sanju Samson-led side, in pursuit of 178, lost both openers within the powerplay, with ‘Orange Cap’ winning opener Jos Buttler departing back to the pavilion for a five-ball duck.

Meanwhile, Buttler’s partner Yashasvi Jaiswal scored only a run in a stiff run-chase, as they managed just 26-2 in their opening six powerplay overs.

Rajasthan Royals powerplay start worse than Mumbai Indians

Earlier in this year’s tournament, the Mumbai Indians slumped to 29-3 in their powerplay against the RCB. Their dreadful batting effort remained the worst powerplay performance of the season until Rajasthan Royals fared even worse against the defending champions at the Narendra Modi Stadium on April 16.

Notably, the Rajasthan Royals have managed blitzkrieg powerplay starts in each of their previous four games this IPL edition. In their tournament opener against the Sunrisers Hyderabad, the Royals raced to 85-1 in the first six overs.

They slammed 57 and 68 in their subsequent two fixtures against Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals respectively, before charting 57-1 against CSK to register four rapid powerplay starts in succession.

Sanju Samson and co. won three of those four games, with their only defeat coming against the Punjab Kings in Guwahati.
