Former India opener, Gautam Gambhir has made a big statement on Virat Kohli regarding the 2023 World Cup.

Gambhir believes that Kohli's role as an anchor will be of utmost importance for Team India and if he plays well, India have a great chance to lift the World Cup once again.

Kohli, 34, will be playing in his fourth 50-over World Cup this year. He won the tournament in 2011, and will be looking to win the coveted trophy for the second time.

“50 over format is the only format where you need an anchor. You really don’t need someone to anchor the innings in T20 cricket. And Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s experience will be very very important,” Gambhir told Star Sports in an interaction.

The former World Cup winner also reckons that with so many young players in the squad, the role of Kohli and Rohit as an experienced leader becomes more important.

“If you have all these impact players and you pick them like Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav, let’s not forget that they will be playing their first World Cup and that’s why Virat and Rohit’s experience will be very very important.

Now, it needs to be seen how the whole batting line up revolves around Virat Kohli or around Rohit Sharma," he added.

Kohli has been in impressive form as of late in the ODIs. He scored a blistering ODI century against Bangladesh last month, and followed it up with yet another ton in the opening ODI game against Sri Lanka.
