Former Sunrisers Hyderabad head coach Tom Moody reckons that Lucknow Super Giants' new recruit Naveen-ul-Haq will be a backup pace bowler for Mark Wood in the next edition of the IPL.

On Friday, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) secured the services of Afghanistan seamer Naveen-ul-Haq. The right arm medium pacer was bought for his base price of INR 50 Lakh in the recently concluded IPL 2023 auction.

LSG's lineup

LSG already had the likes of Avesh Khan, Mohsin Khan and Mark Wood in their fast bowling department. The addition of Naveen-ul-Haq, Daniel Sams, Romario Shepherd, Yash Thakur and Jaydev Unadkat have further bolstered the bowling stocks of the KL Rahul-led team.

Naveen is an experienced T20 campaigner, but he is yet to make an appearance in the cash-rich league. In 122 T20 matches, the pacer has bagged up 153 wickets at an average of 22.09 while maintaining an excellent economy rate of 7.94, with best bowling figures of 5/11.

Moody delighted after picking Naveen

Reviewing LSG's performance in the IPL 2023 auction, Moody said that Naveen is a good backup option for Wood but he also opined that the franchise could've gone for a more experienced option. He also remarked that the injury-prone Wood is not a certainty for all the games.

“Naveen is a good backup Pace Bowler for wood but I think they possibly could have got someone with a bit more you know, I suppose experience in IPL with regards to backup for Wood because it’s certainly no guarantee he’s going to be available for every game,” Tom Moody remarked on Espncricinfo.
