In a remarkable turn of events, Australia captain Aaron Finch has set the record for the third-most number of sixes in T20I history. More importantly, Finch overtook legendary West Indies batter Chris Gayle to attain this phenomenal feat.

Notably, Chris Gayle has 124 T20I sixes to his name, and Finch surpassed his tally during Australia's ongoing Super 12 encounter against Ireland in Brisbane. Opening the batting, Finch got his mojo back in this crucial clash, playing a flamboyant 63-run knock. He smashed three gigantic sixes during his 44-ball stay, achieving the aforementioned milestone.

Five batters with most number of sixes in T20Is

  • Rohit Sharma - 182 sixes in 137 innings
  • Martin Guptill - 173 sixes in 118 innings
  • Aaron Finch - 125 sixes in 103 innings
  • Chris Gayle - 124 sixes in 75 innings
  • Eoin Morgan - 120 sixes in 107 innings

Finch was horribly out of touch before the tournament, so fans and experts were calling for his exclusion. However, the veteran opener exhibited his incredible hitting skills against Ireland, bringing a sigh of relief to the Australian camp.

Regarding the match, Australia posted a challenging 179 on the board, riding on Finch's fifty and vital cameos from Mitchell Marsh and Marcus Stoinis. As of writing, Ireland are seven for no loss after one over.
